URBAN INNOVATIONS WITHOUT BORDERS:
COOPERATION BETWEEN UKRAINE AND THE NETHERLANDS
Improving air quality, developing cycling infrastructure and cleaning open water in cities are the topics that have brought together Ukrainian and Dutch experts, startups and city officials. This was possible thanks to joint activities of SYNCHRO SPACE, ResilientSociety and WorldStartup with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
First of all, we would like to note that 2020 introduced its peculiarities into the format of SYNCHRO SPACE events and significantly expanded the geography of interaction with our like-minded people.

Today, we understand that innovation for urban development has no territorial constraints or boundaries. Proof of this is the collaboration with innovators from the Netherlands who are willing to share their experiences and are open to dialogue to improve the lives of citizens. Although we have different starting points, history and living conditions, we are jointly interested in the sustainable development of cities and the creation of ecosystems that will contribute to the conservation of natural resources and human health.
If we act as before, we will get what we got. We must be innovators, unite and cooperate. Entrepreneurial spirit is the driving force!

Preparation for development of solutions for cities
In July, we held the first joint webinar "Air pollution, heat stress and drought: how cities can cope with these challenges", which helped both urban hackathon cities and teams prepare to create solutions, focus on important challenges, learn from the experiences of colleagues from both countries, take into account best practices and identify the vector for further development.
We spoke with the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ukraine Jennes de Mol, founder of SYNCHRO SPACE Аlissa Ban'kovskaya and founder of WorldStartup Gerrit Jan van 't Veen. Experts Роман Зінченко (Greencubator) and Andrea Orsag (MissionC) shared their experience of creating innovative solutions for cities, as well as Ukrainian and Dutch startups presented their solutions on this topic.
Webinar #1
Air pollution, heat stress and drought: how cities can cope with these challenges
The reality of the past months has shown us that it is never too late to learn something new and do the usual things differently. This year, for the first time, the hackathon was held online, but despite that, you managed to keep the spirit, enthusiasm and energy, which we thought could only exist offline.

In October we held a series of events to strengthen relationships between the Ukrainian and Dutch startup and innovation community. SYNCHRO SPACE and WorldStartup organised two workshops - co-creation meetups.
The main goal is to create a basis for a partnership and implementation of innovative solutions in the cities of Ukraine and the Netherlands together.
There is a potential to support both Dutch and Ukraine startups and scaleups with international business development. To do so we want to provide a context for them to link to interesting partners. For the Ukrainian side, it is an opportunity for created startups and developed solutions at the urban-hackathon SYNCHRO SPACE, to see the ways of piloting and scaling in the international level, find partners, support and expand a network of contacts. It is also the opportunity for cities to focus on critical tasks, determine the vector of further development, get acquainted with the experience of colleagues from a progressive country, adopt and apply best practices.

Co-creation meetup: development of bicycle infrastructure
The first meetup was attended by Dutch and Ukrainian experts: Dutch Cycling Embassy, Rene ter Haar - WorldStartup Tech - Business Developer; Daniel Tonkopii, founder and CEO of Delfast Bikes; Olexii Kushka, pioneer of bike-sharing in Ukraine, founder and CEO of veliki.ua, Bikenow.com.ua, Co-founder of nextbike.ua;
as well as startups: Rodeo (remote sensing for road maintance), GoAbout (platform for intergated travel booking and payment), Bondi (bike and scooter sharing service) from the Netherlands and UUM (offline and online interaction of cyclists), Travelike (application for organizing cycling), iDEV (visualization of hiking trails and bike paths);
and city representatives: Olena Borovska (head of the Smart City Zaporizhya), Yuri Oreshkin (Zaporizhzhya city representative), Mykola Kostrytsia (head of economic department in Zhytomyr).
During this meetup, we found out that Ukraine and the Netherlands have different stages in the development of bicycle infrastructure and, accordingly, radically different problems. In Ukraine, there is a complete lack of urban infrastructure for cyclists. In The Netherlands - traffic congestion by cyclists, bike traffic jams and the ensuing consequences.
Joint work also showed that the Netherlands focus on infrastructure solutions, while Ukraine try to solve the challenges with technological approach.

But at the same time, as a result of the meetup, we see 2 promising areas of partnership:

  1. In Ukraine, it is possible to implement the Dutch experience, taking into account the problems that the Dutch have already faced.

  2. For the Netherlands, the Ukrainian more technological vector of development is a different approach, which is also interesting for implementation.
The purpose of such events is to find new opportunities, ambitious people who work differently and have great potential to scale nationally and internationally.

Co-creation meetup: cleaning of open water in cities
Meetup participants were the experts: Emilie Buist and Robert van Roijen from VP Delta (regional knowledge platform and startup support organisation for water management in the Netherlands);
startups that created the solution during the urban-hackathon SYNCHRO SPACE: BOORYAK (water sculptures with use of bioplato with aquatic plants and auxiliary mechanical aeration of the deep-water zone), l-sonar (drifting scene with water purification option);
and the city oficial: Serhii Hemberg (deputy Governor of Rivne region).
After reviewing the topic from experts in each country, participants wrote down ideas about the possibilities for developing the topic, distributing them on a scale - from small to large. To get a fresh perspective from a different experience and go beyond, Ukrainian participants filled in a part of the board about opportunities in the Netherlands, and Dutch ones - in Ukraine.
We worked together to figure out who the stakeholders are. And what are their needs. Highlighted the main ones. Interestingly, in the Netherlands and Ukraine, participants identified different stakeholder groups on both topics.
Next, we identified trend solutions in the long and short term, taking into account the complexity of their implementation.

This meetup showed that in this topic the problems are common for both countries, so during the meetup, there was a lot of different ideas about collaboration. It is also important that the solutions of startups from different countries turned out to be potentially interesting for implementation in another country.
We strive to become a driving force for the growth of professionals and startups, and their cooperation with cities and companies. Where the result is a comfortable, ecological and smart urban environment, quality services for cities, as well as a strong innovative business in Ukraine.
Alissa Ban'kovskaya,
founder of SYNCHRO SPACE, Ukraine
November 2020 was the most intense and productive. With the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine, SYNCHRO SPACE with WorldStartup organised and held two Round tables: development of bicycle infrastructure and cleaning of open water in cities during the Smart City Live, organized by FIRA, as an online event of the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona.
Round table: development of cycling infrastructure
This round table was attended by Dutch and Ukrainian speakers: Christiaan van Nispen – founder and CEO in TILER, Jan Pecník – founder of BikeFair, Olexii Kushka – pioneer of bike-sharing in Ukraine, founder of nextbike.kyiv, David Hatchatryan – Delivery Manager LLC, SOFTUUP, Stanislav Yevchenko – CEO in iDev - Innovation Development.
Results and prospectives: Bicycle Startup Lab

During a series of events WorldStartup and SYNCHRO SPACE have explored the innovation opportunities of the rise of bicycle usage. We focussed on the exchange of knowledge and technologies between the Dutch and Ukraine startup ecosystem. In general we concluded that there are opportunities both ways due to the difference in local context. Dutch startups can offer advanced systems and products for a better infrastructure. Ukraine startups have a focus on citizens engagement and monitoring that could be of interest for the Dutch and European market. They can be an implementation and technology partner.

WorldStartup will organise an online startup lab in The Hague, The Netherlands. Starting in the first quarter of 2021 we will organise a number of experiments and events to prototype and select relevant bicycle services and products, especially to enhance safety for bicyclists in the city. The lab starts with a 6 months periode. The ambition is to run the lab for a longer period. This programme will be a mix of online and offline events.

As a next step in our cooperation we would like to invite a number of Ukrainian innovators and startups to take part in this lab and it's events. Together we want to explore the opportunity to experiment in other cities and ecosystems. This will require additional budgets and capacities which we will jointly organise by creating a framework of stakeholders with shared interests and values. One of the examples of such a stakeholder is the Dutch Cycling Embassy that has an interest in adding startup innovation in its portfolio of activities.
Round table: cleaning of open water in cities
The event was attended by Dutch and Ukrainian speakers: Emilie Buist - Engineer, Project Manager of "Innovation in Water" in VP Delta; Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industry; Serhiy Hemberg - Deputy Head of Rivne Region; Mykola Dedovets - Representative of the Regional Development Agency; Konstantin Sokolchuk - Hydrologist and Hydroecologist; Anna Ledeneva-Prakhova - BOORYAK Curatorial Team and Olga Syutikova - Master of Biophysics, Biotechnologist.
Results and prospectives: green city landscapes at the heart of urban innovation

During a series of events we have explored the innovation opportunities of deep care for clean water in cities. We focussed on the exchange of knowledge and technologies between the Dutch and Ukraine startup ecosystem.

As a next step WorldStartup and SYNCHRO SPACE want to explore the opportunities to set up a fieldlab programme of at least 12 months to experiment with technologies and models in the city of Rivne. The city of Rivne has an ambition to transform the central river of the city into the heart of a green corridor. With sports facilities, parks, bicycling lanes, etc. This requires better water quality management, redevelopment of public space and social innovations.

Currently the city is building a local, regional and international community of NGOs, universities, knowledge centres etc. to work in and on this fieldlab. We will use the period of December 'till February to create a general proposal with the core team of stakeholders. After this period we hope to be able to start with first minor online activities

In The Netherlands VP Delta, Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industry and others will be involved in planning and delivery of activities.
The final event of this year's cooperation was SYNCHRO SPACE 2020, organized jointly with FIABCI-Ukraine with the support of the UNDP Acceleration Laboratory and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine. This year we have united not only specialists, startups, city representatives, international and Ukrainian experts, but also influencers from 5 continents within the framework of FIABCI-UKRAINE SYNCHRO SPACE AWARD 2020.
Despite the limitations and difficulties of this year, thanks to the efficient partnership, we have achieved excellent results and opened new prospects for further cooperation. We understand that collaboration and a powerful community of like-minded people today are the basis for innovative urban development, both in Ukraine and in the world.

We are grateful for the support and cooperation with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine, the UNDP Acceleration Laboratory, FIABCI-Ukraine, ResilientSociety, WorldStartup, USF and all partners who supported our events. Special thanks to the experts who shared their experience and startups that developed and presented their solutions.
We are confident that together we will succeed in the best impact and sustainable development of the cities of Ukraine and the world.
